# Bulk update records

> Update Salesforce records and keep syncs consistent.

## Overview

A bulk update in Salesforce can correct a field across many accounts, contacts,
or leads, including records created through Unify. Before making the change,
review how that field syncs so the next sync preserves the intended result.

## Prepare the update

Decide which system should supply the field's value. In Unify's
[field mappings](/reference/integrations/salesforce/field-mappings), review both
directions for that field. A read behavior of **Overwrite** brings the Salesforce
value into Unify; **Fill if empty** preserves an existing Unify value. An outgoing
**Overwrite always** mapping can replace a Salesforce value during a later write.

If you're correcting records created by a particular play, use the attribution
fields your team has mapped to Salesforce to identify them. Confirm the report's
record count and a few sample records before preparing the update.

## Update records in Salesforce

Salesforce's Data Import Wizard supports updating existing accounts, contacts,
and leads by their Salesforce record IDs. Prepare a report containing those IDs
and the fields you intend to change, export it, and preserve an unchanged copy.
Make the edits in a separate CSV file.

Follow Salesforce's [guide to updating records by ID](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=faq_import_general_update_with_import_wizard.htm\&language=en_US\&type=0)
for the object-specific import steps. Choose the update-existing-records workflow
and match using Salesforce IDs. Review the ID and field mappings before starting
the import, then review Salesforce's results for failed rows.

## Verify the result in Unify

With bidirectional syncs enabled, the incoming sync picks up Salesforce changes
according to your read mappings. Large updates can take longer to process.
Check a sample record after the changes arrive, then confirm that a subsequent
outgoing sync preserves the expected Salesforce value.

See [Syncing changes from Salesforce](/reference/integrations/salesforce/bidirectional-syncs#syncing-changes-from-salesforce)
for timing and missing-value diagnosis.
