## Overview

Unify integrates with Salesforce to provide access to your CRM data and enable
bidirectional syncs. This lets you:

* **Keep Salesforce in sync:** Write people, companies, emails, and tasks back
  to Salesforce to maintain a record of your team's work.
* **Respect engagement rules:** Use Salesforce data to
  [exclude](/tutorials/how-to-create-an-exclusion) current customers and companies
  with open opportunities from outreach.
* **Use CRM data in plays and sequences:** Use Salesforce fields to identify
  prospects, trigger plays, and personalize outreach.
* **Work with Salesforce in chat:** Find records and request updates using a
  connected Salesforce account.

## How to connect

There are two ways to connect Salesforce to Unify:

| Method | Use it for |
| - | - |
| **Workspace connection** | A shared connection for the team. Supports bidirectional syncs, CRM-based exclusions and automations, and Salesforce access in chat. |
| **User connection** | Each user connects their own Salesforce account. Chat and automatic sync rules can use that account's Salesforce permissions. |

<Tip>
  Most teams should start with a workspace connection. Add user connections when
  reps should use their own Salesforce permissions for chat or automatic sync
  rules.
</Tip>

## Prerequisites

Your Salesforce organization must support API access. The Salesforce account you
connect needs **API Enabled** and permission to access the records and fields
you want Unify to use. See
[Salesforce editions with API access](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=000005140\&language=en_US\&type=1).

## Setup

  <Tab title="Workspace connection">
    <PlanAvailability plans="Business" />

    You need permission to manage the Salesforce integration in Unify.
    Administrators have this permission.

    <Steps titleSize="h3">
      <Step title="Choose an integration user">
        Choose the Salesforce account Unify will use for shared syncs and other
        workspace operations. Its permissions determine which Salesforce records
        Unify can read and update.

        A dedicated integration user lets your Salesforce administrator manage
        Unify's access independently and identify its activity in Salesforce.
        You can also use an existing account with the required permissions.

        Review the
        [required permissions](/reference/integrations/salesforce/required-permissions)
        with your Salesforce administrator before connecting the account.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Connect Salesforce">
        Open [Settings → Salesforce](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/integrations/salesforce)
        and click **Set up Salesforce**. If a user connection already exists,
        open the connection selector and choose **Add workspace connection**.

        Sign in with the Salesforce integration user you chose and authorize
        Unify. When you return to Unify, the page shows **Workspace connection**.
        Open the connection menu and select **Details** to confirm the connected
        email and Salesforce organization.

      </Step>

      <Step title="Review permissions">
        Click **View Permissions** to check the connected account's access.
        Ask your Salesforce administrator to resolve any missing permissions,
        then click **Refresh** to check again.

        <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-permission-checks-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-permission-checks-dark.png" alt="Salesforce permissions dialog with all displayed profile permissions enabled and the Refresh control visible." />

        See [Required permissions](/reference/integrations/salesforce/required-permissions)
        for the setup checks and access needed for your mappings.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Review field mappings">
        Field mappings determine which Salesforce fields correspond to Unify
        attributes, which values Unify reads and writes, and when existing values
        can be overwritten. You can also set default values for empty fields.

        Under **Field mappings**, click **Edit mapping** for each object you want
        to sync. Review the default mappings, adjust them for your Salesforce
        fields, and click **Save**.

        <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-field-write-behavior-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-field-write-behavior-dark.png" alt="Salesforce field mappings with the write-behavior options open for Account Name." />

        Mappings are shared by connections to the same Salesforce organization
        in your Unify workspace. See
        [Field mappings](/reference/integrations/salesforce/field-mappings) for
        the available fields and write behaviors.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Review sync rules">
        Sync rules control when Unify creates or updates Salesforce records.
        Open **Sync rules** to choose which prospecting, sequence, email, and
        task events should sync and how people and activities are represented
        in Salesforce.

        For prospecting, **Sync if already exists** updates matching Salesforce
        records, while **Sync** also allows new records to be created. Choose
        **Do nothing** for events you want to leave disabled, then click **Save**.

        <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-sync-rule-options-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-sync-rule-options-dark.png" alt="Salesforce prospecting sync menu with Do nothing, Sync if already exists, and Sync options; Do nothing is selected." />
      </Step>

      <Step title="Enable syncs">
        Turn on **Bidirectional syncs** once your mappings and sync rules are
        ready. Unify starts an initial sync of Salesforce data and synchronizes changes
        according to your configuration.

        See [Bidirectional syncs](/reference/integrations/salesforce/bidirectional-syncs)
        for sync behavior and timing.
      </Step>

  <Tab title="User connection">
    <PlanAvailability plans="Pro and Business" />

    Connect your own Salesforce account to use it in chat and for automatic
    sync rules configured by your team. Each user can have one personal CRM
    connection at a time.

    <Steps titleSize="h3">
      <Step title="Connect your account">
        Open [Settings → Salesforce](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/integrations/salesforce)
        and click **Connect Salesforce**. If the page already shows a connection,
        open the connection selector and choose **Add personal connection**.

        Sign in with your own Salesforce login and authorize Unify. To use your
        account for workspace sync rules, connect to the same Salesforce
        organization as your team's workspace connection.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Confirm your connection">
        When you return to Unify, the connection is labeled **User connection**.
        Open its menu and select **Details** to confirm your Salesforce email,
        username, and organization.

        <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-personal-status-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/integrations/salesforce/salesforce-personal-status-dark.png" alt="Salesforce user connection marked active and healthy." />

        Your team's workspace settings determine when Unify uses your connection
        and whether you can write to Salesforce in chat.

To apply each rep's Salesforce permissions, see
[When to require user connections](/reference/integrations/salesforce/connection-preferences#when-to-require-user-connections).

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Why can't I add a personal connection?">
    Ask your administrator to check **Allow users to set up personal Salesforce
    connections** in **Workspace settings**. Also check whether you already have
    a personal CRM connection; each user can have one at a time.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I reconnect an expired authorization?">
    Select the affected connection and click **Reauthorize**. Sign in with the
    intended Salesforce account and complete authorization again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I change the connected Salesforce account?">
    Select **Change user** from the connection menu and authorize the correct
    account. Check **Details** afterward to confirm the email and organization.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What should I do when a sync fails?">
    Open the failed attempt in **Sync log** and review its error and
    connection. Correct invalid record values or ask your Salesforce
    administrator to resolve missing access for the connected account.

    Once the issue is resolved, choose **Retry sync** if available. Retrying
    requires permission to manage the Salesforce integration in Unify.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens when I disconnect Salesforce?">
    Disconnecting a workspace connection stops shared sync and automated
    actions that depend on it, and can disable dependent engagement policies.
    Review the confirmation before selecting
    **Disconnect** from the connection menu.

    Disconnecting a user connection removes that user's Salesforce authorization
    from Unify. Operations that require it will need the user to reconnect.
  </Accordion>
