# List building

> Find and organize accounts and contacts.

## Overview

Build a list to collect the companies or people you want to work with, such as
accounts for an outbound campaign or contacts from an event. You can research
prospects in chat, select records already in Unify, or bring in data from another
source. Once you have a list, review its members, share it with your team, and
use it to prepare outreach or run a play.

Each list holds either companies or people. Start with companies when choosing
accounts to target, or people when organizing contacts for follow-up.

## Choose your approach

| Starting point | Approach |
| - | - |
| You want to find or research prospects. | [Build with chat](/reference/lists/build-with-chat). Describe your criteria, refine the results, and save a list. |
| You want to collect records already in Unify. | [Create a list](/reference/lists#create-a-list) from criteria or add records to an empty list. |
| You have data in a file or another tool. | [Import data](/reference/lists/import-data) through a CSV upload, chat, MCP, or the Data API. |
| You want a group that reflects changing conditions. | [Create an audience](/reference/lists/create-an-audience) using filters such as company details or recent activity. |

## Lists and audiences

Use a list to keep a collection whose membership you control. For example, create
a list of attendees for an event follow-up campaign, then add or remove people as
you prepare the campaign. Creating a list from criteria adds the records that
match at that time; later membership changes happen through separate actions.

An audience groups companies and people according to saved conditions. Its results
change as records match or stop matching those conditions. For example, an
audience of companies that visited your pricing page in the past week reflects
their recent activity whenever you review it.

## Work with your list

Open a company or person to review their details before deciding how to follow
up. Use the list's filters and columns to focus your
review, then select records to take an action. See
[Lists](/reference/lists) for membership, sharing,
exports, and sequence enrollment. You can also
[work with lists through MCP or the API](/reference/lists#use-mcp-or-the-api)
from another application.

Your [book of business](/reference/book-of-business/work-your-book) provides a
starting point for working the accounts assigned to you. Lists let you organize
records around a particular project or workflow across your workspace.
